Open Letter to Secretary Hillary Clinton

Dear Secretary Clinton,

It has come to my attention that the US is going to host UNESCO’s World Press Freedom Day 2011. I take this as a good sign!

Because of the great importance of this event, I am confident you will use the opportunity to make it clear that the US government is firmly in favour of the freedom of the press, no matter how embarrasing that freedom might prove to your office, or you personally.

I won’t pretend to make suggestions, as your policymakers and speechwriters will do that for you. However, I have every confidence that you will use the event to show that the US lamets certain recent, and of course unintended, tramplings of the freedom of the press; and that the US reaffirms its status as a haven of free speech and the freedom of the press.

In closing, I must say I’m very happy to see that you and the Obama Administration are using this opportunity to right recent wrongs you have made. It’s the moral — and American — thing to do!

Sincerely yours,
Andrew McInnes
